"If you work for it, it will come"

Dear NAPM-OC Colleagues,

This month I wanted to share some of the goals that we are working on for fiscal year 2004-2005. Some of these were referenced in last month's column. Specifically, here is what we're attempting to do this year:

  • Empower affiliate members to reach their professional goals.
  • Train board and committee members on all association knowledge and skills required to do their jobs in service of the affiliate members.
  • Maintain and optimize our continuing education and certification programs as some of the best in the country.
  • Maintain and optimize our website as one of the best in the country.
  • Successfully execute events on our local level including The June Forum, The Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, ISM Satellite Seminars, and others.
  • Oversee and ensure a Fiscal surplus or at least break-even at the end of this year.
  • Ensure a full succession plan for the next year.
  • Maintain lively, educational, interactive, and fun monthly dinner meetings.
  • Optimize our membership by creating and executing an effective marketing plan.
  • Enhance our career/job assistance offerings.
  • Win the ISM Affiliate of the Year.
  • Have a lot of fun!

At our August dinner meeting, we had the pleasure of a presentation by Steve Kay, a well-known author and presenter. I happened to be a fan of Steve's after he presented the Keynote Speech at the ISM Leadership Training in Las Vegas in 2002. Steve's presentation last month on the power of writing really charged up our audience and he was besieged with many questions and observations well after he completed his speech. I received a note from Steve recently, which said,

"Joe, you have a wonderful affiliate. Everyone is friendly and interested in learning. They sure make a guest feel welcome. All the best, Steve Kaye."

Thank you Steve.

Come to a dinner meeting and see for yourself what we have to offer.

On empowerment to reach your professional goals:

I had the pleasure recently of hearing from a long-time business acquaintance and former co-worker. This young man had worked enthusiastically in an associate position in Quality Assurance some ten years ago. Five years ago, he took a newby position in Purchasing. Today, he has recently accepted a position of Materials Director, with 5 experienced buyers and a Purchasing Manager reporting to him. He commands a salary of over six figures and his future looks bright.

It can be done. What are you prepared to do for yourself?
