REMEMBERING THE 2nd ANNUAL
SCHOLARSHIP FUND GOLF TOURNAMENT

by Joe Polance, C.P.M., Golf Tournament Committee Co-Chair

All the preparations had been made. The marketing was done. Sponsors had committed. Finally, the big day had arrived.

Saturday, September 13th, Soboba Springs Royal Vista Golf Course. Fifty-one enthusiastic golfers and some twenty volunteers had braved the distance, their budgets, the heat, the schedule, and all the other general trials and tribulations one must endure to participate in the Second Annual NAPM fundraising golf tournament.

Hot Starbucks coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts awaited our linksters upon their arrival. Eager volunteers were at the ready to sign them up, hand out goody bags, and ensure their needs were met. Our audio-visual Wizard, Alta Cardiff, had already set up a projection screen showing an endless loop of clips from the DVD Caddyshack, and shortly thereafter added digital pictures of our players and volunteers in action.

Players went off to the driving range and putting green to take practice and also to enter the putting contest.

Soon it was getting close to tee time and opening ceremonies. All were greeted and welcomed. Mr. W. Scott Steele, NAPM-OC member from Parker Hannifin, performed a spirited golf reading, written by Terri Okazaki, that got the golfers fired up and ready to play.

As a representative from last years champions, Orange County Container, Bob "Little Arnold" Fullagar, had the privilege of striking the first tee shot from hole #1 as the assemblage looked on. Mr. Fullagar confidently announced to his competition, "Watch out, this is just a little demonstration of what you'll be seeing all day!" and then swung his club mightily, whereupon making contact, the gag ball promptly exploded in white powder, drawing derisive laughter from the crowd.

That got the tournament started with a bang.

Everyone then proceeded to their holes and we were underway.

Golfers of all abilities played their way through hole after hole, encountering successes, failures, elation, and frustration. Volunteers kept them going by circulating fresh squeezed lemonade, cold water, treats, and sliced watermelon.

Soon enough, after all the Mulligans, String, and best balls were used up, 18 holes were reached, and it was time to cool off in the clubhouse banquet room while the DJ piped in music to relax by. Once again, the volunteers took over, hawking raffle tickets, making everyone comfortable, organizing raffle prizes, and tabulating scores.

A bar-b-que buffet dinner was served including chicken, ribs, beans, salad, rolls, and dessert.

Now it was time for the awards and raffle prizes.

3rd place plaques went to Double Eagles II- The Sequels who scorched the course with a 64. Jerry Aplin, Tom Cole, Juan Rios, and Cyphess Weatherspoon made up the Double Eagles II.

2nd place plaques were earned by El Roy's Chip Shots-OC Litho with a red hot 62. El Roy Codding Jr., Carl Rensner, Jason Moore, and Randy Barnaby made up this team.

And the newly crowned champions of the 2003 NAPM Golf Tournament, were none other than the Office Depot "Stringers", who shot a scintillating 54! The winners, Allen Young, Jim Hudson, Chris Lupo, and Mike Burcroff, all walked away with $25 gift certificates to the Soboba Pro Shop for their efforts. Congratulations guys, well deserved!

Other teams participating were Fullagar's Containers, Magic Kingdom Crew, Parker's Heroes, the Hi-Tech'ers, Double Eagles for All!, Double Eagle II-The Sequels, El Roy's chip shots/OC Litho, Laura's Likables, Moreno Valley Vikings, Purchasing Kings, NAPM-IE, and The Bill Zablan Entourage.

The "Longest Day" Trophies went to NAPM-IE, a 3-man foursome of Bill Ilten, Dennis Underwood, and Ron Provencio.

The putting contest was won by up and comer Matthew Petit, who won $24 in a tie-breaker. Matthew was golfing courtesy of his father, who had previously won a free entry to the tournament, by successfully naming the tournament mascot, GISMO.

Bob Fullagar won a long drive contest, and Mark Seiler a closest to the pin, both receiving Soboba Pro Shop gift certificates for their efforts.

No one could quite manage the hole in one prize which would have resulted in a Suzuki 80cc motocross motorcycle for an ace.

Over $1200.00 in raffle prizes were awarded, including some very unique gifts, several gift cards, and a grand prize of a Toshiba TV/DVD combo unit.

Grand prize winner Carlos Baumgarten warmed up by winning a stereo radio, then followed that up by taking the TV/DVD grand prize.

Barbara Whalen, who worked the event as a volunteer, won a Weekend Getaway at the Hilton Hotel, courtesy of our NAPM dinner meeting hosts, Hilton Airport Hotel. Barbara was also a double winner by taking a putting machine as well.

Juan Rios collected a $100 wine gift basket, courtesy of Wine Country Baskets.

Our most competent webmaster, Mr. Steve Riis, who also played in the tournament, donated a nice golf putter that was won by Don Perkins. Rick Pineda collected a nice golf bag donated by Terri Okazaki.

Our other winners included Bill Zablan, Celest DiCaro (another double winner), Alan Young, Jason Moore, Dave Heag, Kathy Manley, Jeff Crook, Scott Steele, Chuck Ayres, Laura DeLance, Paul Petit, Les Martin, Priscilla Harvey, who won a variety of gift certificates to California Pizza Kitchen, Sport Chalet, Home Depot, Baskin-Robbins, Starbucks, and other prizes.

All in all, it was a fun and successful event, and everyone seemed to enjoy their day.

To all those that helped, in so many ways, thank you. We couldn't have done it without you, and your efforts and contributions made all the difference.

Our volunteer team, which included Eugene Eckert, Norma Carberry, Barbara Whalen, Beverlee Redwine, Ron Sandoval, Bob and Alta Cardiff, Chuck Ayres, Richard, Aaron, and Janet Provencio, Art Bohlman, and their IE and CAPPO counterparts Sharon Ilten, Patricia Wilson, Barbara O'Keefe, Debra Perry, Jeff and Mrs. Townson, and Frank Lo, thank you for generously and cheerfully donating your time to help the cause.

To our sponsors and advertisers: Microsemi, Orange County Container, De Anza Manufacturing, Electronic Sourcebook, McDonald Packaging, Q-C Manufacturing, Waxie Sanitary Supply, GM Interiors, and Shogun Precision Castings and last but not least, Perpetual Frontiers- Mr. Merle Roberts. Thank you for your support.

To those that donated prizes, time, or others: American Suzuki Motorcycle Division, American Suzuki Accessories Division, Wine Country Baskets, Hilton Hotel, Steve Riis, O.C. Printing, Lyn Weiss (lemonade), and everyone that bought raffle tickets. Your donations were very much appreciated.

And one more, to Mr. James Booth, C.P.M., NAPM-OC Past President, 1986, thank you too, for your unexpected but generous donation.

As a result of all these efforts, we're happy to say we are able to put funds toward C.P.M. test module reimbursements again this year.

See you all next year!
