Purchasing and Materials Management Certificate Programs

In addition to the workshops offered by NAPM-Orange County, instruction intended to prepare for the C.P.M. Certification examination is offered in Orange County both at Coastline Community College and Learning Tree University and on-line from California State University Dominguez Hills.

Coastline Community College, in co-operation with NAPM-Orange County, offers a professionally developed Purchasing and Materials Management Certificate program. The curriculum includes the four Purchasing and Materials Management courses listed below, plus 6 additional units from an elective list of business classes, for a total of 18 units. Learning Tree University has structured their Purchasing Management Certificate Program (current classes) to build skills and knowledge to enhance the students career and qualify for promotion. The Purchasing Management Program is based on the National Association of Purchasing Managers (NAPM) recommended curriculum. The program consists of the four classes listed below.

California State University Dominguez Hills (current classes) has modeled their on-line Certificate Program around the NAPM guidelines. The Dominguez Hills program consists of the 4 classes listed below.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Supply Management 102, The Supply Environment (3.0 units)
Topics include outsourcing and make-versus-buy decisions, value analysis, inventory control, warehousing and traffic, capital equipment, institutional and governmental purchasing practices, and supply management's role in new product development.

Supply Management 104, Supplier Cost Reduction/Negotiation (3.0 units)
Issues in forecasting future prices based on historical data and negotiation techniques will be reviewed and examined through the application of theories to case studies and a team project. Topics will include price analysis and negotiation: the ways one subject supports the other and techniques to reduce cost. Advisory: Supply Management 101 and 102. Graded or credit option

Meet with program advisors and faculty to learn about professional opportunities in Purchasing Management and requirements for National Association of Purchasing Management's A.P.P and C.P.M. professional designations. Mastering the Purchasing Process
Beginning with the role of purchasing in contemporary organizations, this course covers the four key elements of the purchasing process: identifying requirements, preparing solicitations, analyzing suppliers, and execution, implementation and administration of contracts.

Mastering the Supply Environment
Focusing on current practices in supply management, this course covers supplier negotiations, use of information technology, quality issues, and relationships with internal and external entities.

Increase your contribution to the bottom line by analyzing sourcing plans, organizing and controlling inventory, implementing standardization programs, and developing supply plans based on demand forecasts.

Managing the Purchasing Function

Develop a solid understanding of commercial law and the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) as well as proven legal strategies and techniques to protect your organization in contracting situations.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Courses are offered via the Internet three trimesters each year; however, not all classes are offered every trimester. You must take the Foundation Course first (PRX200) and then the remaining 3 courses.

PRX 200 – Purchasing Fundamentals
Course examines the fundamental elements of purchasing. Emphasis is placed on current business trends and their impact on the purchasing profession. Fundamental concepts, methods, and techniques used to evaluate requirements for purchasing goods and services are discussed. Case studies allow for application to real-world situations.

PRX 310 – Cost-Price Analysis and Negotiation
Course provides an overview of the tools and techniques required for determining the reasonableness of cost and price, the relationships between the two and establish the basis for negotiating a final contract between buyers and sellers.

PRX 330 – Public Sector Procurement
Course examines the relative aspects unique to Public Sector Purchasing as well as comparing and contrasting the legal and regulatory consideration inherent to this environment with those of private sector procurement.

PRX 340 – Advanced Purchasing Concepts
Through the detailed examination of case studies, students explore the real-world application of purchasing concepts including: specification, standardization, simplification, supply, legal and ethical issues, partnering, total quality procurement and logistics.

PRX 319-14 Basic of Supply Chain Management
New course added to certificate for students starting fall, 2001. Provides an overview of the field of Supply Chain Management and its role in the functional nature of organizations
