As you have discovered by now, I read all of the dinner meeting evaluations each month. In April there were a couple of interesting comments. Several members were asking for not just motivational presentations but speakers who would help them restore enthusiasm about their profession. Based on some projects that I have recently worked on, I think many purchasing professionals want to find a way to become more influential in their organizations. It can be frustrating to be the last ones to learn about a major initiative that requires purchasing participation or find that the organization has established new performance measures for your department without your input. While I don't know who made the comments, I would bet that companies who put more value in purchasing, have staff that are more enthusiastic about their jobs. But to become more influential, you will need to be prepared. I use the metaphor of a holiday dinner. The kids sit at the children's table. Why? Children need to gain the necessary knowledge and experience so that they can understand and contribute to the conversation at the adult's table. Many of us need to expand our knowledge so that we can have a seat at the table that sets goals, initiates projects, etc. This includes understanding the strategic planning process, the project management process, corporate finance, etc. The April ISM magazine had some interesting articles on how to become more influential. If you haven't already read these articles, you might want to take a few minutes to read them. I want to thank all of our members who ran for the Board in the April election. Making that commitment to your profession is commendable. But more important, serving on the Board provides you with the opportunity to learn new skills and gain experience in a wide variety of areas. This is definitely a positive step in your career path. In closing, remember that as a result of our annual golf tournament, we have a program for reimbursement of some C.P.M. test fees. Please take advantage of this!
