NOMINATION LETTER FOR 2003 NAPM-OC EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR

APPLICATION FOR EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR AWARD

We nominated Steve Richards, C.P.M., due to his dedication to the Supply Management Profession. He made certain all buyers had the opportunity to be members of NAPM-Orange County, giving Parker Aerospace the highest number of members/associate members of any company in Orange County. He also made arrangements to host one of the NAPM dinner meetings and has been very supportive of his staff members involved with the various committees.

He has also been supportive of attending classes and has made arrangements for over 40 hours of training for his staff in the past five months. He is supportive of staff members obtaining and maintaining C.P.M. certifications and seems to favor those individuals that have C.P.M.'s when it comes to making a hiring decision.

He has considerable experience in Supply Management, beginning with his graduation from Arizona State University's School of Business Management, with a degree in Purchasing and Materials Management. He has held progressively higher positions in procurement in both aerospace and commercial industries. He maintains his contacts at ASU and recruits graduates into an Intern Program at Parker.

He is currently the project manager for the next level of procurement, which Parker is calling Strategic Procurement. He has also been highly active in and supportive of the Lean Initiatives underway at Parker. He has embraced the partnership concept and won't hesitate to get on a plane to visit a supplier to congratulate them on a job well done or work out problems or issues.

He is also a great boss to work for - he is motivating and appreciative of the extra efforts people working for him seem to make. He won't hesitate to give credit to his staff and shoulders the blame when things go wrong - treating mistakes as learning experiences. He truly understands and practices all of the team concepts, beginning with appointing group leaders to head commodity teams within the department.

He exhibits such a high level of professionalism and represents his department and company well. He has taken Purchasing from a tactical department to a strategic department within the corporation.
