Why Join? If you are presently employed full-time in a purchasing or material management position, you might as well admit that purchasing is your career. You probably want to do your life work to the best of your ability, and you probably could struggle along unaided and get by. BUT, if you want to take advantage of all that is available to you, grow as you go, and have some fun along the way-- you ought to join the NAPM. What is available to you through NAPM? NAPM is an organization that not only spans the United States, but also has strong ties to the International Federation of Purchasing and Materials Management, a worldwide purchasing organization. Nationally, members total in excess of 38,000. With over 180 affiliate associations, you can be sure, no matter where you are, there is an NAPM affiliate nearby. There are national special interest groups that provide an arena for exchange in many purchasing specialties, such as MIS, educational and institutional, health care, electronics and MRO. Committees provide a springboard for acquiring skills in planning, managing, and organizing. How can I grow through NAPM? First, if you have an unanswerable question, you can check with the Information Center and Library. You will undoubtedly get an answer, or at least, good guidance toward an answer. Next you can attend the Annual International Purchasing Conference, a showcase for the current thinking of purchasing professionals. Then you might consider one of the over sixty seminars offered each year throughout the country. If that is not convenient, you can try either independent or group study from fifty different programs. One visible way to grow is to obtain the Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) designation. This program, initiated in 1974 by NAPM, is a universal way to know who are the purchasing pros. Over 23,000 original certifications have been awarded since the program's inception. Like any well founded certification, this one requires periodic renewal to retain the credential. What else? The NAPM publishes a wide variety of purchasing related material. There is Purchasing Today, with its Report on Business, (a monthly publication sent to all regular members), Journal of Purchasing and Materials Management, Impact (public and legislative policy, both by subscription) and the C.P.M. study materials.
